When people interact, they display certain behaviors regardless if they are aware or not. The behavior can be used to infer the person's, thoughts, emotion, upbringing and values, though the accuracy of the inference is another factor itself.
I observed the interactions among my friends and noticed a number of interesting factors. The one that is most obvious to me is the desire to speak. In this interaction, and for many other interactions between friends, many wanted to be heard but only a few are listening. The one that manages to speak is mainly the loudest with a combination of repeating themselves till they got the attention of the rest. I believe this stems from the culture where we are so self serving and in the age of convenience, we expect to have what we demand handed over to us immediately. With this selfishness and need for instant gratification, we start to press on until we get the attention of everyone, not bothering to wait and listen to others. While it was not demonstrated in an extreme manner in the interaction, it is a glimpse of the general direction society is heading towards. However, there are some who patiently wait and listen to others, showing respect to the one speaking and only voicing out when there is a chance, resulting in the others giving him or her their fullest attention. This became a very interesting factor I derived in that interaction. When someone patiently listens and flows into the conversation at an appropriate moment, people naturally give their full attention to the person. This happens irregardless of age and gender as it occurred not only from male and female individuals but also both younger and older individuals in the interaction.
Wrapping up, what was seen in the interaction is that respect and patience leads to good communication, irregardless of gender or age.
Interesting point. Yes, respect and patience can establish good communication irregardless of gender or age. As you follow the flow of the conversation you will get better understanding on what they are interested in. The things that you say will be given the fullest attention i believed it is because you know what they are interested in listening. However, i feel that gender and age still do affect communication. As there are some topic that are sensitive in gender. These sensitive topic may cause misunderstanding and fiction. Age could also be a barrier to communication. Some old generation people would be offended to some words or gesture. Whereas younger generation would take it as a joke. As many things have evolved as time pass. The words or gesture meaning could have changed.
ReplyDeleteIt happens to me a lot. Sometimes, in a discussion or conversation with multiple parties in it, i think u might have also realized that after one made a suggestion on the topic being discussed, some may want to add on but was cut off by someone who was being more confidence in speaking or expressing. It may not be always because of loud and they might not have realized that they had cut someone off from the sharing. However, i believed this can be improved by usage of more non-verbal gestures.
